Currently recognized renewalable energy sources are: solar power, hydropower, wind power, geothermal heat derived power, and biomass derived power. One of the major hurdles towards commercialization of these fossil fuel alternatives is their inefficiency, and a poor cost-effectiveess in production.
To address the need for sustainable renewal clean energy, RSI is focusing on creating novel hybrid organisms for biofuel production and the development of new directed evolution approaches to select superior enzymes for biodegradation and synthesis of complex fuels.
